New Delhi, December 24, 2024 – Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing critique against the government on Tuesday, highlighting the struggles of ordinary citizens due to rising prices. In a video shared on his social media handles, Mr. Gandhi claimed that the government, instead of addressing the issue of inflation, is “sleeping like Kumbhakaran,” referencing the mythical character from the Ramayana who would only wake up once every six months. He suggested that the government remains oblivious to the hardships faced by the common people, particularly in the face of skyrocketing prices.
The video, filmed during his recent visit to a vegetable market in Giri Nagar, showcases interactions with housewives and market vendors who expressed their distress over rising food prices. Gandhi, who spoke with residents about their daily struggles, emphasized how the increasing costs of essential goods have forced families to cut back on even the smallest necessities.
In the video, Mr. Gandhi said, “A few days ago, I visited a local vegetable market, where I spoke with both vendors and shoppers. What I learned was alarming. The budgets of ordinary families are being severely stretched. Inflation is wreaking havoc on people’s lives. I spoke to several housewives, and they shared how the rising costs of food items are making it impossible for them to manage daily expenses.”
The Opposition leader further stated that the government’s lack of action has left millions in a state of despair. “While the people are grappling with the burden of inflation, the government remains silent and inactive, turning a blind eye to the crisis,” he added.
Mr. Gandhi’s remarks echoed concerns that have been repeatedly raised by opposition parties and economists, who have warned that the rising cost of living, especially for food, has placed an unprecedented strain on lower and middle-income households. With prices of vegetables, pulses, and other daily essentials continuing to climb, families are being forced to reduce their consumption, compromising on health and nutrition.
During his visit, Mr. Gandhi also interacted with small traders in the market, who explained how the cost of their goods had also increased, further adding to the financial burden of the people. Many vendors expressed frustration over the lack of government intervention to curb the rise in prices, which they say has led to decreased sales.
The Congress party, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, has consistently criticized the government for not doing enough to control inflation and ease the pressure on common citizens. Gandhi’s recent visit to the market is part of his ongoing effort to bring attention to issues that directly affect the lives of the people, particularly those in lower-income groups.
As the government prepares for the upcoming Parliament session, the issue of inflation is expected to be a central theme of debate, with the opposition calling for concrete measures to address the growing economic crisis.
