Dehradun, April 22, 2025: The process of installing smart meters across Uttarakhand is gaining momentum as the state’s Electricity Regulatory Commission has directed that all industrial units must be equipped with smart meters by August 2025. The move is part of a larger initiative to enhance energy management and curb electricity theft.

In addition to the industrial sector, the commission has also mandated that all High Tension (HT) electricity consumers must have smart meters installed by June 30, 2025. This deadline also applies to residential quarters occupied by officials and employees of key state power bodies — Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (PTCUL), and Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL).

The smart metering initiative aims to bring greater transparency to electricity usage, provide accurate consumption data to consumers, and improve billing efficiency. These meters will allow real-time tracking of electricity usage, enabling a better balance between demand and supply across the state’s power grid.

According to officials from the power department, the rollout will be executed in phases, starting with urban areas. Rural areas will be covered in the subsequent phases to ensure a smooth and comprehensive implementation.

Strict Monitoring and Reporting Ordered
The Regulatory Commission has emphasized timely execution of the plan and has instructed all related departments to closely monitor progress and submit regular updates to ensure deadlines are met.

This initiative is being seen as a major step toward modernizing Uttarakhand’s power infrastructure and making the state’s energy distribution system more reliable and efficient.
