March 14, 2025 | Dehradun:
The Uttarakhand government has declared March 15 as a public holiday in honor of the state’s unique and culturally significant Pahadi (Hill) Holi. This special leave will apply to all government and non-government offices, as well as educational institutions and schools across the state.
The decision reflects the government’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Uttarakhand’s rich cultural heritage, particularly the vibrant tradition of Pahadi Holi, which holds deep roots in the Kumaon and Garhwal regions.
Unlike the typical Holi festivities seen elsewhere in India, Hill Holi in Uttarakhand is known for its distinct musical flavor, group singing (baithaki and khari holi), and the use of traditional instruments. Villages and towns come alive with folk songs, dances, and colorful gatherings, turning the festival into a celebration of community, joy, and cultural pride.
By granting a public holiday, the state encourages citizens to fully participate in and cherish this folk celebration that has been passed down through generations. The move has been welcomed by locals as a recognition of the significance of their traditions in the fabric of modern Uttarakhand.
