Uttarakhand is reeling under an intense heatwave as temperatures in the plains continue to climb, pushing daily life to the edge of discomfort. On April 26, 2025, several districts in the state’s low-lying regions recorded temperatures close to 40°C, marking one of the hottest days of the season so far.
Dehradun, the state capital, also witnessed a significant temperature spike, with the mercury crossing 38°C — a milestone not seen in the past three years. The soaring heat has led to growing concern among residents, especially schoolchildren, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
In cities like Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, the blazing sun combined with dry, hot winds made conditions harsh throughout the day. People were seen avoiding the outdoors during peak hours, while roadside vendors and traffic personnel struggled under the sweltering sun.
“It’s extremely hot this year. Even fans and coolers are failing to provide relief during the afternoon,” said Ramesh Rawat, a shopkeeper in Dehradun.
Meanwhile, the hill regions of the state, which are typically known for cooler climates, are also witnessing a noticeable rise in temperatures. Although not as intense as in the plains, the heat in towns like Nainital, Pauri, and Almora has begun to make residents uncomfortable.
The Meteorological Department has advised people to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours. No immediate relief is expected, as the weather is likely to remain dry and hot over the next few days.
Experts are attributing the rising temperatures to changing weather patterns and reduced pre-monsoon activity. With the heatwave intensifying, people across Uttarakhand are hoping for an early spell of rain to bring much-needed relief.
