Dehradun, February 15, 2025 — In a move aimed at promoting transparency and energy efficiency, the Uttarakhand government has decided to install smart electricity meters at the residences of all state ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and senior government officials. The initiative was directed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, as part of a broader digital energy reform in the state.
The decision was announced by the Principal Secretary of the Energy Department, who confirmed that the process of installing smart meters is already underway. So far, smart meters have been installed in over 24,000 households across the state.
Smart meters allow real-time monitoring of electricity consumption and encourage responsible usage. They are also expected to reduce power theft and improve billing accuracy. “This step reflects the government’s commitment to lead by example in adopting technology that supports transparency and efficiency in public services,” said the energy department official.
The installation of smart meters in VIP and official residences is being seen as a significant symbolic and practical step. It is expected to set a positive precedent for the rest of the state, as Uttarakhand gradually transitions toward a more tech-driven power infrastructure.
The government also plans to expand the smart meter initiative to cover all urban and rural households in the coming phases.
