In a groundbreaking decision by the Union Cabinet, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has been expanded to cover all senior citizens aged 70 years and above. Under this new provision, every senior citizen will now receive health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family, significantly improving healthcare accessibility for the elderly across India.

Key Highlights of the Scheme:

  • Free Healthcare for All Senior Citizens: Senior citizens aged 70 and above will now be eligible for free healthcare under the PM-JAY scheme. This will reduce the financial burden on families and allow senior citizens access to a wide range of treatments.
  • Rs 5 Lakh Insurance Cover: Each family will receive up to Rs 5 lakh in health insurance coverage. This amount can be utilized for hospitalization, surgeries, critical illnesses, and other medical needs in both government and empanelled private hospitals.
  • Nationwide Reach: The scheme is designed to be implemented across the country, ensuring that senior citizens, particularly those from economically weaker sections, benefit from comprehensive healthcare without worrying about the costs.
  • Impact of the Decision: This move is expected to benefit millions of elderly citizens who often face challenges in accessing healthcare due to financial constraints. Senior citizens are more prone to age-related diseases and require frequent medical attention. The Rs 5 lakh cover will ensure that their health expenses are taken care of, enhancing their quality of life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been an advocate for improving healthcare access for all, especially the vulnerable sections of society. This decision strengthens the government’s commitment to making healthcare affordable and accessible for all.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel praised the move, emphasizing that this initiative aligns with the government’s goal of providing universal healthcare.

Public Reaction: The announcement has been met with widespread approval, with various sections of society lauding the government for taking a significant step toward elder care. Healthcare experts believe that this decision will bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility for the elderly, who often require specialized and more frequent medical attention.

With Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY’s expansion, India continues to march towards achieving its goal of universal health coverage, ensuring that healthcare is a right for all citizens, irrespective of age or financial status.
