Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has expressed strong discontent over the continued unrest in Manipur, accusing the Prime Minister of neglecting the state during its ongoing crisis. In a statement on Wednesday, Ramesh highlighted the breakdown of constitutional machinery in Manipur, noting that despite the turmoil, the state has yet to receive any attention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, according to Ramesh, “goes everywhere but Manipur.”
Manipur has been grappling with violent ethnic conflicts since May 2023, resulting in widespread displacement and numerous casualties. The state has been under a heavy security clampdown, with curfews and restrictions in place to curb the violence. However, Ramesh pointed out that despite these grave circumstances, the Prime Minister has not made a visit to the region to assess the situation firsthand.
“The people of Manipur continue to suffer in silence, and yet, they are still waiting for a visit from their Prime Minister,” said Ramesh. He further criticized Modi for his frequent visits to other parts of India and abroad while Manipur remains in the midst of an ongoing crisis. Ramesh’s remarks reflect growing frustration over the central government’s response to the situation in the northeastern state.
The Congress leader also accused the government of failing to restore peace and normalcy in the state, suggesting that the lack of leadership on the ground has exacerbated the suffering of the people. “The constitutional machinery has broken down, and the administration in Manipur is in disarray,” Ramesh added, urging the government to take immediate action to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure the safety of civilians.
The people of Manipur, many of whom have been displaced from their homes, are calling for swift intervention to restore order and bring an end to the violence that has disrupted their lives. Meanwhile, Ramesh has called on the central government to prioritize the region’s recovery, including providing much-needed humanitarian assistance and engaging in dialogue with all stakeholders to bring about lasting peace.
As the crisis in Manipur continues, the government’s response remains a point of contention, with many questioning whether enough is being done to address the concerns of the state’s residents.
