March 23, 2025 | New Delhi:
Passengers at New Delhi Railway Station faced significant inconvenience on Sunday as heavy crowds and delays in major trains led to chaotic scenes resembling a stampede-like situation.
Thousands of travelers were left stranded on platforms as several popular trains, including the Shiv Ganga Express, Swatantrata Sainani Express, Jammu Rajdhani Express, Lucknow Mail, and Magadh Express, were reported to be running behind schedule. The delays sparked confusion and tension among passengers, many of whom had been waiting for hours.
With crowds swelling beyond control, the situation escalated, and authorities were forced to deploy additional security personnel to manage the rush and maintain order. Rail officials said technical and operational reasons were behind the delays but assured that efforts were underway to streamline departures.
Eyewitnesses reported passengers jostling for space, with little clarity on train schedules. “There were announcements, but the platforms were so crowded that most people couldn’t even hear them properly,” said a frustrated commuter heading to Lucknow.
The Railway Police Force (RPF) and Delhi Police worked jointly to regulate the movement of people and prevent any untoward incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Railway officials have advised passengers to check train timings through official channels before arriving at the station and to allow extra time for boarding during peak travel periods.
The incident has reignited discussions around infrastructure challenges and passenger management at one of the country’s busiest rail hubs.
