March 31, 2025 | Dehradun:
In a move aimed at honoring public sentiment and preserving cultural identity, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday announced the renaming of 18 locations across the districts of Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar.
The decision, announced on March 31, 2025, reflects the state government’s commitment to aligning place names with local heritage, historical significance, and the aspirations of the people. The Chief Minister stated that the renaming exercise is being carried out after careful consideration and consultation with local communities and administrative officials.
“These changes are a step towards restoring the cultural and traditional essence of our land. It is our responsibility to respect the emotions of the people who have long demanded these changes,” CM Dhami said.
While the official list of the renamed places is expected to be released soon, the government confirmed that the changes will be implemented following due administrative process, including updating government records, signage, and public documentation.
The announcement has received mixed reactions—many citizens welcomed the move as a restoration of identity and heritage, while others urged the government to also focus on development and infrastructure in the renamed areas.
The Chief Minister reassured the public that the government remains equally committed to delivering on its promises of growth, governance, and cultural preservation.
