Dehradun: The process of assessing Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in selected urban local bodies of Uttarakhand has reached a significant milestone, as the dedicated single-member commission has completed its survey and submitted the report to the Chief Minister.
The survey was conducted across four municipal bodies in the state, focusing on collecting updated and accurate data to determine the proportion and eligibility of OBC reservation in local governance. This exercise comes as part of the state government’s effort to ensure that reservations are implemented in a legally sound and transparent manner.
Officials associated with the process stated that the commission carried out detailed fieldwork, gathering demographic data and reviewing existing records to present a comprehensive analysis. The aim was to align reservation policies with current population figures and judicial guidelines.
The submission of the report is expected to pave the way for further administrative decisions, particularly concerning upcoming urban local body elections. The state government will now examine the findings and recommendations before taking the next steps.
Earlier, the implementation of OBC reservation in urban local bodies had faced legal challenges, prompting the need for a fresh and data-driven approach. The formation of the single-member dedicated commission was seen as a step towards addressing these concerns and ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions.
With the report now in the hands of the Chief Minister, stakeholders are awaiting clarity on how the government will proceed, especially in terms of finalizing reservation quotas and election timelines.
Further developments are expected once the government reviews the report and makes its position public.
