Dehradun, February 4, 2025 — In a significant administrative move, the Uttarakhand government has finalized the composition of a high-powered committee to monitor and facilitate the next steps for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
According to official sources, the committee will include key senior officials from various departments, reflecting the multi-dimensional nature of the UCC process. The members of the committee are:
- Principal Secretary (Law and Justice)
- Principal Secretary or Secretary (Home Department)
- Secretary (Finance)
- Inspector General, Stamps and Registration
- Resident Commissioner
- Ajay Mishra, Nodal Officer for UCC in Uttarakhand
In addition to the above members, a special invitee will be nominated by the Chief Secretary, bringing further strategic expertise to the table.
The formation of this high-level panel signals the government’s commitment to pushing forward with the implementation of the UCC, a major legal reform aimed at bringing uniformity in personal laws for all citizens, irrespective of religion or community.
The committee will be tasked with interdepartmental coordination, policy planning, and providing legal and administrative support as the UCC framework transitions from draft to implementation phase. It will also examine logistical challenges and provide recommendations to ensure a smooth rollout across the state.
This move comes after months of public consultations and expert review of the UCC draft, which was submitted to the state government by a dedicated law commission.
The presence of top bureaucrats from law, finance, home, and registration departments ensures that the committee is well-equipped to address the legal, financial, and administrative dimensions of this historic reform.
Officials have stated that public interest, inclusivity, and constitutional alignment will remain central to the committee’s approach as Uttarakhand moves closer to becoming the first Indian state to implement a Uniform Civil Code in recent times.
