Dehradun, February 23, 2025 — In a recent clarification, the Uttarakhand Home Department stated that marriage registration under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not be linked to residence proof. The announcement comes amid growing public queries and concerns regarding the documentation required under the newly introduced civil code.
Officials from the Home Department emphasized that residence certificates will not be a mandatory requirement for couples registering their marriage under the UCC. This clarification aims to simplify the registration process and eliminate any misunderstandings about eligibility based on domicile or address verification.
A senior official explained, “The UCC has been designed to bring uniformity, transparency, and simplicity to personal civil matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. The intention is not to complicate procedures but to make them more accessible and equitable for everyone.”
The state became the first in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code, and the move has drawn both national attention and public curiosity. With marriage registration being one of the key areas under the code, the department’s clarification is expected to provide relief to many who feared bureaucratic hurdles.
Authorities reiterated that the focus remains on ensuring legal recognition of marriages while upholding the rights of individuals across all communities. More detailed guidelines on documentation and procedures are expected to be released by the government in the coming weeks.
The implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand is seen as a landmark step toward legal reform and civil equality, with the state leading by example in addressing long-pending demands for a unified legal framework.
