Dehradun, February 2025 — In a significant decision aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare system, the Uttarakhand government has extended the retirement age of specialist doctors by five years. Now, medical specialists working in government services will be able to serve until the age of 65, instead of the earlier retirement age of 60.
This move comes in response to the increasing need for experienced medical professionals, especially in remote and hilly areas of the state where there is often a shortage of specialists. The government believes that extending the service period will help maintain continuity in patient care and reduce the gap in healthcare delivery.
An official from the Health Department said, “The expertise and experience of senior doctors are invaluable. With this decision, we hope to retain skilled professionals in our hospitals and ensure better health services for citizens, particularly in underserved regions.”
The decision has been welcomed by many in the medical community. Doctors say this extension not only acknowledges their contribution but also allows them to continue serving patients who rely on their guidance and care.
The policy will be applicable across all government hospitals and healthcare institutions in Uttarakhand where specialist doctors are employed. It is also expected to help in managing the rising patient load in state-run facilities.
With this step, Uttarakhand joins a growing number of Indian states that are revising retirement norms in key sectors to make the most of skilled manpower.
