March 7, 2025 | Dehradun:
In a major crackdown on tax evasion, the Central Investigation Unit (CIU) of the State Tax Department raided five construction companies across Uttarakhand, exposing a massive Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion of nearly ₹6 crore. Acting swiftly, the department managed to recover ₹3.67 crore on the spot during the operation.

The companies were found to have created fake supplier firms to fraudulently claim Input Tax Credit (ITC)—a deceptive tactic that caused significant revenue loss to the government. These firms used non-existent or deregistered entities to generate bogus invoices and falsely boost their tax credit claims.

Under the guidance of State Tax Commissioner Ahmed Iqbal, a total of 13 CIU teams carried out coordinated raids in Dehradun, Haridwar, Chamoli, and Uttarkashi districts. The action comes after two months of surveillance, during which the department closely monitored suspicious purchase patterns linked to these firms.

Investigators revealed that several of the so-called suppliers had either never existed or had their GST registrations cancelled. Some of the companies were even trading in goods for which they were not legally registered, further violating GST regulations.

This operation marks a significant success for the tax authorities in their ongoing efforts to clamp down on fraudulent practices in the construction sector, which is increasingly being scrutinized for tax irregularities.

Officials have confirmed that further investigations are underway, and more legal action may follow based on evidence collected during the raids. The department has reiterated its commitment to ensuring tax compliance and warned that strict action will be taken against those engaging in such deceptive practices.
