Haridwar, April 28, 2025 — In anticipation of the upcoming Ardh Kumbh Mela 2027, the Uttarakhand government has unveiled a major infrastructure plan that includes the construction of two new Ganga ghats in Haridwar. This initiative is aimed at managing the massive footfall of pilgrims expected during the grand spiritual gathering.
The new ghats, planned to stretch over approximately five kilometers, are designed to ease congestion along the riverbanks during peak bathing days and offer devotees a safer and more organized space for religious rituals and holy dips.
Officials from the Urban Development and Irrigation departments confirmed that the proposal has been approved in principle, with detailed planning and feasibility studies currently underway. “We are expecting a record turnout in 2027. These new ghats will help distribute the crowd more evenly and reduce pressure on existing facilities,” a senior state official stated.
The project is also part of a larger beautification and riverfront development initiative to enhance the spiritual and environmental experience for visitors. Along with the ghats, there are plans to install modern amenities, including changing rooms, sanitation facilities, LED lighting, and accessible pathways for the elderly and differently-abled.
The Ardh Kumbh Mela, held every six years in Haridwar and Allahabad (Prayagraj), draws millions of pilgrims from across the country and abroad. With spiritual significance rooted in ancient tradition, the festival is one of the largest religious congregations in the world.
Local residents and religious leaders have welcomed the move, noting that well-maintained infrastructure not only supports the influx of pilgrims but also reflects positively on the city’s image as a sacred destination.
Construction of the new ghats is expected to begin later this year, with completion targeted well ahead of the Ardh Kumbh. The government has emphasized that environmental guidelines will be strictly followed to preserve the ecological health of the Ganga river.
As preparations pick up pace, Uttarakhand is gearing up to host another historic Ardh Kumbh — blending tradition, faith, and modern facilities for millions of pilgrims who will gather on the banks of the holy Ganga.
